Trustee for the TASHA Foundation

Overview

We are actively looking for new trustees who will be able to bring their own qualities and skills to the Tasha Foundation.

There is an opportunity to assist, oversee and guide the charity as it evolves and grows in the coming years.

Background to the Organisation

The TASHA Foundation is a Charitable Company Limited by Guarantee. 

The Charity exists to provide confidential information, support, therapy and counselling to individuals affected by mental health difficulties and substance misuse problems.

Founded in May 1991, the TASHA Foundation was a response to a community demand. The project is now well established with key funders from Ealing and Hounslow. The Charity employs salaried people and volunteers who work from a network of offices, GP surgeries and other client venues in West London.
 
The TASHA Foundation is a provider of services to local PCTs London Boroughs and Community Development Projects. We operate a range of services for counselling and rehabilitation of our clients. These include: Aftercare; a rent deposit scheme; Support Groups; a Learning Centre and our Internet Café, on Brentford High Street

Incoming annual resources for 2008 was £996,650 (at July 2008).

The Charity’s success has been achieved by the development of long term partnerships with funders, the delivery of innovative solutions and a strong commitment to its clients from a dedicated well motivated team of professional staff.

Requirements for the Trustee

The trustees have the ultimate responsibility for the charity, for its property, finances and the employment of our staff or volunteers.

Our key responsibilities include using each Trustees expertise to help the Chief Executive Officer to run the Charity. This includes be involved in mapping out the strategic direction and its work, developing and managing staff and volunteers and make policy decisions for your charity. You will also ensure it’s accountable to its beneficiaries, to the Charity Commission and the public in general.

We do not benefit financially from our position.

Trustees should be willing to become actively involved in helping to run the organisation. Ideally their expertise will complement that of current Board members, in one of the following areas:

  1. Business Development – experienced in securing funding, an understanding of Marketing principles and practice or
  2. Legal: can support the charity for example with decisions pertaining to property, developing commercial contracts
  3. Experience of the Health sector - you may have worked in a management position for example in the Heath or Social Services 

They will also:

  • Be prepared to learn/keep abreast of relevant legal principles
  • Act with reasonable skill and care in all that they do, including delegation. No convictions for serious crime,
  • Not have been declared bankrupt
  • Not been disqualified as a company director. Mentally incapable people cannot act as trustees.
  • Will not expose the charity to unreasonable or unacceptable risk
  • Be able to prepare for and attend approximately 6 Board meetings annually in the late afternoon /early evening in Brentford
  • Be able to undertake occasional ad hoc assignments relating to their expertise.
  • Work as part of a team

Responsibilities

  1. Ensure compliance with relevant legislation (for example the Charities Acts 1993 and 2006) and the requirements of regulatory bodies such as the Charity Commission.
  2. Review the charity’s activities, ensuring it does not stray from its charitable objects.
  3. Administer the charity. This means that we meet to formulate strategy agree tasks and the policies required to enable the charity to achieve its objects. We may agree to undertake assignments from time to time linked to our areas of expertise and/or our management capability
  4. Ensure that the charity is solvent at all times. Protect the assets of the charity and ensure that such assets are only applied in furtherance of the charity’s objects.
  5. Review expenditure and accounts.

Please Note

Indemnity insurance is available. However the policy will not cover willful acts of negligence or acts of bad faith. Provided trustees act within the powers given to them and do not act dishonestly or negligently, personal liability should not be an issue. There are training courses available for newly appointed Trustees.
